Melvill & Moon - handmade safari equipment from Africa
"Laudator temporis acti" means: the "romance of a bygone age". For Melvill & Moon, this is not only the old company motto, but also an obligation and inspiration. Melvill & Moon is a manufacturer of high-quality safari equipment such as luggage or furniture, which is manufactured exclusively in South Africa using regional natural products. The design concept is based on old safari and military equipment reminiscent of bygone eras.

In memory of an old epoch
The company's history goes back eight generations of the Melvill family - to the year 1700 when they came to South Africa as missionaries. The Melvill family established itself as landowners, cattle farmers and soldiers. In the years 1836 to 1939, a "kind of adventure" developed in hunting that never existed again in this form: one explored unknown landscapes, one loved thrills and the danger of Big Game hunting. At that time, when you followed tracks or roamed the steppe for days on end, you had to have practical and robust chairs, tables and other hunting equipment with you. At the same time, the objects had to be luxurious and stylish. This was especially true for members of the British military, who wanted their precious drops safely stowed away on the safari hunt as well as their hunting weapons.
Over the centuries, all generations of the Melvill family have shared a passion for safari and a love of Africa. Today, the Johannesburg-based family business is run by Rob, Dael and James Melvill, who share management, production and distribution.
The Melvill & Moon product range
Throughout the company's history, Melvill & Moon has developed a wide variety of products, including an elephant saddle for the English King George V, who met with his uncle and the Maharaja of Nepal to hunt big game in South Africa. Today the manufactory concentrates on the product segments seat covers, luggage & bags, furniture and leather goods.
Until a few years ago, Melvill & Moon products were only available through its own online shop and selected dealers abroad. Since July 2014, Melvill & Moon has been cooperating with Out of Africa Compagnie GmbH from Cologne for the import and sale of its products in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Seat covers
Melvill & Moon seat covers are not just a protection for the car seats, which can be damaged by dust and dirt during the safari. They are also practical companions on the way through the African steppe. In the side pocket you can store gun magazines, smartphones or important documents. On the back of the front seat covers there are larger pockets for additional items.
The seat covers, which are made for different vehicles and car brands, are available in several colours. Beige is not only authentic in colonial style, but also helps against heated seats in the strong African sun. Dark grey, on the other hand, is very stylish and elegant. In principle, the seat covers are made of robust, waterproof material that gives bacteria and germs no chance, does not sweat and is not statically charged. The covers cover the entire seat - including armrest and headrest. They do not slip or shine. The 510 g heavy linen is double stitched and finished with robust zippers.

Luggage & Bags
When a trip or safari feels like an expedition to unknown countries, clothing and belongings are stored in Melvill & Moon luggage and bags. But the range is no longer just about travel bags for safaris - large and sturdy. Meanwhile, Melvill & Moon also manufactures laptop bags, handbags, shoe bags and toilet bags. These also include some special models such as a bag for ornithologists or a belly bag with cartridge compartments and side pockets for small game.
The models always have impressive names like "African Ranch Bag", "The Tool Bag" or "The Man Bag". Melvill & Moon has three versions available: sand-coloured or black linen with leather applications or completely made of leather. However, not all bags are available in all versions. The largest product range is made of sand-coloured linen - the classic.
Furniture
In earlier times, the traditional safari hunt in tents could not have been complete without chairs, tables and other furniture, so that the British colonialists could be comfortable. Even though today hardly any hunters in Germany would travel to Africa with bag and baggage for safari hunting, the furniture from Melvill & Moon is still popular - among other things as equipment for the hunting room at home. And even if their use has changed, the furniture is still robust, practical and easy to assemble and disassemble. Leather, brass and other robust materials such as linen and wood ensure durability and an authentic safari look.
The furniture range includes chairs, tables, camp beds, weapon stands, wash stands, side tables and luggage stands, a field bar and a desk.
Leather Goods
For hunting, travelling or other situations additional equipment is sometimes not wrong - for example the Serengeti Sundowner, a leather wine bottle and wine glass bag. Melvill & Moon also offers leather goods for the coffee pot, as a cartridge holder, luggage label or book cover. The leather goods are hand-stitched so that each piece is unique.
